Slightly strange ZFS problem on a FreeBSD 7.3 box recently – booted up to find the ZPOOL degraded complaining about an unavailable drive – but yet still reading and writing to it. The error message was; One or more devices could not be used because the label is missing or invalid. Sufficient replicas exist… Read more »

Why I am not using FreeNAS 8 just yet
Recently the drive containing the operating system for my home NAS server died (thats 2 drives in 2 months !) and so I thought it was a good opportunity to upgrade to the new (few months old) FreeNAS v8 – it lasted less than 24 hours because its just not release ready in my opinion…. Read more »
Install VMware Server 2 on Ubutu 11.04 with 2.6.38 kernel
Skip to instructions Update: Due to more bugs found with VMware Server and the unlikely event that they will be resolved I have since switched to VMware Player on Ubuntu. Recently the whole device failed to power up and seemed… Read more »

Having been very busy recently deploying a record number of Microsoft security patches this month, one of the few problems has been MS09-055 (KB973525) which is a cumulative update of ActiveX killbits. But this does seem to kill a legitimate ActiveX control used by Microsoft Office Visio Viewer which opens any Visio diagrams in IE…. Read more »
Firefox hanging when refreshing page?
I’ve recently been having a nightmare with Firefox (3.0.latest) and refreshing a webpage running an AJAX application I am developing. This was driving me crazy, I was checking my code, checking the server but with a normal refresh Firefox would just hang. It worked in IE(!) and hitting Ctrl-F5 would work and but otherwise Firefox… Read more »
